Chatham Islands Border Biosecurity

SPS Biota works with Environment Canterbury (ECan) and Chatham Islands Council to help protect the Chatham Islands from potential biosecurity threats.

This programme has been successfully implemented for the Chatham Islands where it has now been actively managed for over 10 years.

The Chatham Islands are a unique part of the world and this programme helps to manage the pathways in which pests or disease could reach the islands.

The Chatham Islands are located 700 kms east of NZ and are significant ecologically and economically to NZ. The islands boast one of the highest levels of endemism in the world. For example, the Chatham Islands are the only place in NZ that does not have varroa mite, which is a big pest for the bee industry.
